Kansas is known for growing monster bucks. Every year a Kansas buck shows up on the record books for both typical and non-typical. Over 15,000 bucks were taken by bow and arrow here in Kansas just last year. The abundance of deer is jaw dropping and the number of wall mounters continues to increase.

Archery season begins mid – September and runs through the end of December. This gives archers plenty of time to plant and farm food plots, use trail cameras to track patterns, and most importantly, keep an eye on trophy bucks in the area.

If you are thinking of taking a hunting adventure in the great state of Kansas to bag a monster buck, let me give you some ideas of the best counties to bow hunt in. The top counties with the most all-time entries of whitetail deer in the record books include: Butler, Barber, Comanche, Greenwood, and Sumner. All of these counties are located in the south-central to south-eastern areas of the state.

With that being said, monster bucks are found all over Kansas. This is one of the great aspects of living in a state that has a large variety of a rich mixture of crop lands, wetlands, and plenty of timber. We grow monster bucks state wide. Just about every county in the state has produced at least one record breaking buck, with most counties producing several more. Let’s not forget about the trophy buck shot a few years ago in Pottawatomie County and Trent Siegel’s monster buck, nicknamed “Mufasa”, just last year in Wabaunsee County, both counties are located in the north-eastern part of the state.

Aside from all of the privately owned land and federally owned properties, there is over 214,000 acres of public/walk-in hunting areas through-out Kansas. Some of the best public places to bag a monster whitetail deer are El Dorado Wildlife Area in Butler County, Barber State Fishing Lake area in Barber County, and Tuttle Creek Wildlife Area located in Pottawatomie County. Tuttle Creek is home to over 12,000 acres of wildlife area, offering a ton of room for whitetail deer to mature to the beasts they are known to be.

So to all my fellow Kansans, and even avid archers, looking for a place to drop a monster whitetail deer, I highly recommend checking out this beautiful state. Head out to your stand or blind in your favorite hot spot or one of the above locations and wait for your chance at a Kansas trophy buck. And while you’re at it, throw on some Bucks of Kansas gear to make your hunt that much more memorable.

Happy hunting!

- Corey Markley, Head of State for Bucks of Kansas
