Nebraska’s archery deer hunting season will open Sept. 1 — the first time in 35 years the season has opened earlier than Sept. 15.
The early opener was requested by archery hunters to allow hunting of deer when bucks are still in velvet — the stage when a deer’s antlers are covered in soft fuzz.
Kit Hams, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s big game program manager, warns the earlier start could mean hunters will have to contend with some warm days and lots of view-blocking vegetation. But on the plus side, he says, few other hunters will be out.
The archery deer season runs through Dec. 31. Archery permits are valid statewide, with restrictions, and unlimited in number. The permit bag limit is one deer of any kind.
